The week starts with less help from the Fed.Two hot inflation reports landed last week. Long bonds rallied through both. The 10-year yield closed Thursday at 5.10%, down from 5.24% a week earlier and more than 20 basis points below Wednesday's high. The hike bet faded too. Kalshi's October contract hit 55 cents after CPI. It fell to 13 cents Friday morning after Fed Chair Kevin Warsh declined to preview the meeting. Then the Fed went quiet. Its blackout runs from Saturday through Oct. 29, and the decision comes Oct. 28. Stress moved to the price of money. CoreWeave's default swaps passed 1,000 basis points. Oracle's hit a record 288. The Philadelphia chip index fell seven straight days, down about 12.4%. Thursday's rally went to rate-sensitive stocks. Homebuilders and banks rose. The Russell 2000 closed back above its correction line. So the week ahead has a narrow script. Treasury supply returns Wednesday. Netflix tests growth stocks Tuesday. Everything else is open-ended: AI financing, oil and leverage. Three questions are on the calendar. Three are not.
The SpaceX IPO made Elon Musk the wealthiest man who has ever lived. Now he's spending it to complete his dynasty... He's already acquired a $40 billion AI firm and a $1 billion turbine company. But a handful of companies still stand between him and total control of the space economy. Click here to see why early investors could walk away with a fortune.
Can the Long End Clear Supply at 5.1%?Scheduled: Wednesday, Oct. 21, 1 p.m. ET Treasury sells $13 billion of 20-year bonds. It is the first coupon sale since early October. The 10-year cleared at 5.30% on Oct. 7. Dealers took just 2.5%, against a 9.4% average. The 30-year sold at 5.618% a day later, and dealers took 6.8%. September's 20-year sold at 5.420%. Those buyers came in near the highs. This one meets a long end that has since rallied about 20 basis points. What the market assumes. Last week's rally was about growth, not inflation. Fed Governor Christopher Waller argued that the overnight rate is "not driving the 10-year yield much." The surprise. A sale that tails at lower yields. Buyers who paid up at 5.3% may not chase 5.1%. The signal. Dealer takedown. A dealer share well above the 6.8% the 30-year left them would say real demand stopped at higher yields.
Does a 13-Cent Hike Bet Survive 12 Days of Silence?Scheduled: Fed blackout Oct. 17 to 29. Decision Oct. 28. Kalshi's October hike contract traded at 18 cents before CPI. It fell to 13 cents Friday morning. Officials left a wide spread of views. John Williams sees one more hike this year and none in 2027. Beth Hammack said the Fed "might need to move even more." Michelle Bowman said she feels no urgency. What the market assumes. No October move. One hike remains in view for December. The surprise. Repricing with no new data or speakers. Last week, about $10,000 of buying moved the same contract 5 cents. A big swing on light volume would reflect flows, not news. The signal. The two-year. It closed Wednesday at 4.82% after a 13-basis-point spike faded. If the two-year climbs while the long end holds, the market is pricing the Fed again.
Do Growth Stocks Get a Bid Back?Scheduled: Netflix, Tuesday, Oct. 20, 4:01 p.m. ET Netflix posts results after Tuesday's close. It lands after a week that hit growth stocks hardest. On Wednesday the Nasdaq and Russell 2000 each fell 1.9%. Leadership moved the other way Thursday. The homebuilder ETF rose 4%. Bank ETFs gained 1.7% and 1.8%. Vertiv (VRT) fell 3.6%. The chip index extended its losing streak to seven sessions. What the market assumes. Options imply a move of about 7.6% either way after the report, according to Unusual Whales data. The stock is down 22% this year, Morningstar said. The surprise. A strong report that still gets sold. Last week Citigroup (C) fell 5.6% after its best third-quarter revenue in a decade. If beats keep fading, the selling is about rates and funding, not results. The signal. The Russell 2000 against 2,761.58. It closed Wednesday at 2,729.53, below that correction line, then rose back above it Thursday. Holding it means the rotation into rate-sensitive stocks has room.
What Does the Next AI Loan Cost?Open-ended. No date set. Volta's $5 billion loan set the mark. It priced at 6.5 points over the base rate and 95 cents, the wide end of talk, Bloomberg reported. JPMorgan and Goldman Sachs backed only $1.3 billion. More deals are in line. Broadcom (AVGO) was arranging more than $50 billion for its OpenAI chip earlier this month, people familiar said. SpaceX is seeking about $40 billion for chips, people familiar said. What the market assumes. Default swaps are pricing stress. Oracle's (ORCL) are at a record 288. CoreWeave's (CRWV) are above 1,000. Nvidia's Jensen Huang takes the other side. He said CoreWeave's "cost of capital is actually decreasing." Nvidia is a CoreWeave shareholder. The surprise. A deal that prices inside Volta's 6.5 points. That would back Huang. A pulled or wider deal would back the swaps. The signal. The spread, not the base rate. A softer Fed lowers the base rate for every borrower. Only lenders set the spread.
You’re Being LIED To About The Iran War
Forget EVERYTHING you’ve heard about the Iran war. Especially the reasons why we’re bombing the country. Because THIS is the real reason.
Is Oil Pricing a Blockade or a Recovery?Open-ended. Event contracts settle Oct. 31. Midterms Nov. 3. Hormuz clearance averaged 11.62 million barrels a day in the week to Oct. 13, about 68% of its baseline, Kpler said. Two senior Iranian officials told Reuters that Tehran wants oil high through the U.S. vote. The energy truce is over. Ukrainian drones hit Russia's Ryazan refinery Thursday. IEA members agreed to speed up a release of more than 20 million barrels of diesel. What the market assumes. U.S. restraint and a slow recovery. Polymarket's line on a U.S. announcement ending the blockade by Oct. 31 fell to 7.5 cents midweek. The U.S.-Yemen ceasefire line rose to 87.5 cents. The surprise. An attack in the Gulf of Oman. The Iranian officials said attacks would spread there. A drone already hit a tanker at Sohar, where Gulf crude moves to supertankers outside the strait. The signal. Freight. Gulf of Oman supertanker charters topped $1 million a day earlier this month. A higher rate would mean the bypass is starting to price like Hormuz.
Where Does Leverage Break Next?Open-ended, with a dated deadline: MSCI's final list, Nov. 11. MSCI now bars "non-operating companies" from its global indexes. Its earlier test flagged Strategy (MSTR) and Metaplanet. Changes take effect at the Nov. 30 close. The costly money is still moving. Strive priced a 15% preferred at $90, about 16.7% on money partly for bitcoin. What the market assumes. Friday's rebounds treated the worst as over. Ether fell to a two-month low Thursday after outsized liquidations. Seoul's Kosdaq jumped 4.46% Friday and tripped a buy-side curb. The surprise. A second wave. Crypto exchanges now list perpetual futures on chip stocks. A new chip selloff can force sales in both markets at once. The signal. Strategy against bitcoin. Strategy was down about 3% before Friday's open after the MSCI rule, Investing.com reported. If it keeps lagging bitcoin into Nov. 11, the market is pricing index selling, not crypto.
The calendar is light. The tests are not. Wednesday's 20-year shows whether 5.1% has buyers. The two-year shows whether 13 cents is right. Every other answer arrives on no schedule, in a loan spread, a charter rate or a stock that may leave an index. Last week the market decided the Fed was not the main problem. This week it has to prove that without the Fed saying a word.
