TQ Evening Briefing

Retail sales fell 0.6%. Consumer sentiment dropped to 51. The US said the Iran blockade runs indefinitely. Reddit joins the S&P 500 Monday. The S&P closed its third straight winning week anyway.

The Setup

The S&P Closed Its Third Straight Winning Week. The Consumer Data Tells a Different Story.

The Nasdaq dipped. The Dow slipped. The S&P fell slightly but finished a third consecutive winning week.

Retail sales fell 0.6% in July against a 0.1% gain estimate. Consumer sentiment dropped to 51 from 55.2, reversing two months of improvement. Treasury yields reversed course and rose despite the soft data, Bessent threatened Iran with economic isolation and the 10-year climbed back toward 4.7%.

WTI recovered to $82 after the Defense Secretary said the naval blockade of Iranian ports can continue indefinitely. The market closed the week with a clear split: strong corporate earnings saying one thing, weakening consumer data saying another. Both are on the screen.

TQ Trade Implication

Q2 earnings tracking 50% growth. Consumer spending tracking down. The two do not usually coexist for long. Retail earnings next week from Walmart, Target, and Home Depot answer which signal leads into the fall.

Theme One

Retail Sales Missed by the Largest Margin of the Year. The Consumer Is Starting to Crack.

July retail sales fell 0.6% against a 0.1% gain expected. Control group sales, the most important category for GDP, fell 0.4%, the first monthly decline of 2026. Consumer sentiment dropped to 51 in August, well below the 54.5 estimate and down 8% from July.

Only 8% of consumers expect their income to outpace inflation over the next year. That is down from 18% in December 2024.

Republican sentiment is at its lowest since the 2024 election. 19% below where it stood before the Iran war started. That is not a political signal. It is a spending signal.

Bank of America projects that next year the five AI hyperscalers will spend more on capex than the other 495 S&P companies combined. That money comes from somewhere. Part of it comes from corporate budgets that would otherwise go to workers, expansion, and wages.

TQ Execution Bias

Control group retail sales falling for the first time this year is the data point that changes the calculus. Own defensive consumer staples, not discretionary. Walmart, Home Depot, and Target earnings next week are the next read on whether July was a blip or a break.

Theme Two

The US Said the Iran Blockade Is Indefinite. Bessent Threatened Measures "Never Seen Before."

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said the US Navy can keep its blockade of Iranian ports running indefinitely, rotating ships in and out as needed. Bessent said today that the US would impose economic measures on Iran "that have never been seen before." WTI rose on both headlines.

A tanker was attacked trying to leave the Persian Gulf. The UK maritime agency confirmed minor damage from an unmanned aerial vehicle. A tanker attack on a departing vessel, not an entering one, is a new escalation type. Previous attacks have targeted ships entering the Gulf. This one targeted a ship trying to leave.

The US blocking departing tankers and attacking ships that try to breach the blockade means the Gulf is now a sealed container in both directions. The IEA already revised its 2026 demand forecast down by 1.6 million barrels per day. The supply cut is now matched by a demand cut. Oil above $80 in that environment is all war premium, no fundamentals.

TQ Edge Setup

Indefinite blockade language removes the deal timeline. Own refiners over crude producers. Marathon Petroleum (MPC) and Valero (VLO) are up 20% and 15% this week already. Refinery margins expand when crude availability tightens. That trade does not require a peace deal to work.

Theme Three

Reddit Is Joining the S&P 500 on Monday. Passive Funds Must Buy Before the Open.

Reddit (RDDT) surged 12.6% after S&P Dow Jones Indices announced it will replace AvalonBay Communities (AVB) in the S&P 500 starting Monday. Every passive fund tracking the index must buy Reddit before Monday's open. The stock is down 31% year-to-date before today. The inclusion creates forced institutional demand at a time when the float is limited and the short interest is meaningful.

Reddit has been under pressure all year on concerns that AI models divert traffic from its message boards. The inclusion does not resolve that thesis. But it does mean anyone short Reddit into Monday morning is buying a forced institutional bid without a clear timeline for when it ends.

TQ Execution Bias

The passive inclusion bid runs through Monday. After that the stock reverts to its fundamental question: does AI search reduce Reddit traffic enough to impair revenue growth. Own through Monday. Reassess after the rebalancing dust clears.

Quick Themes
  • DeepSeek raised its prices fourfold, from $0.87 to $3.96 per million tokens during peak hours. Still cheaper than US rivals but the gap is closing. A Chinese AI company that built its reputation on undercutting everyone just moved toward pricing power. That is not a small shift.
  • Applied Materials (AMAT) fell 5% despite beating on earnings. Semiconductor systems revenue of $7.04 billion barely cleared the $6.96 billion consensus. After ASML raised guidance twice, the market expected more. The miss was narrow. The punishment was not.
  • Sandisk (SNDK) got a JPMorgan upgrade to overweight with a $2,250 price target, implying 47% upside from Thursday's close. The stock is already up 544% year-to-date. JPMorgan said NAND demand driven by AI inference is a structural shift not yet fully priced. That is one of the year's more audacious targets on one of the year's best-performing stocks.

The Close

Retail sales fell the most in months.

Consumer sentiment reversed two months of recovery. The US said the blockade runs indefinitely. Reddit joins the S&P 500 Monday. The S&P closed its third straight winning week with the consumer looking tired and oil looking stubborn.

Next week the consumer picture gets its real test. Walmart, Target, Home Depot, and Lowe's all report. Nvidia reports the week after. The summer inflation relief bought the market a rally. Whether the consumer can sustain it is the question that carries into September.
