TQ Morning Briefing

SK Hynix posted the biggest quarter in its history and still came up short of the model. The stock fell hard enough to take the whole index down with it. Best ever wasn't the bar.

MARKET STATE

The split has flipped this morning as Dow futures are softer for the first time this week.

Nasdaq and the S&P are higher by around 0.2%.

Iran fired ballistic missiles at US forces overnight. Central Command intercepted them. The pause is over.

Crude jumped on the news. WTI up nearly five percent to over $83. Brent back through $87. Two sessions of gains would have priced the Fed differently. One session has to.

Korea did the overnight damage. The Kospi tripped its circuit breaker for the second straight day. Third in nine sessions. It has never happened on consecutive days before. SK Hynix closed down nearly ten. Samsung down five. Taiwan followed. Japan slipped.

Market Implication

The pause held for less than 48 hours. The Fed decides on an oil path that is not the one it walked into the room with. Watch whether the semis gap fills or the crude bid holds past the opening hour. Both cannot be true through two o'clock.

721,000 people across 100 countries have signed up.

And according to Alexander Green - the man who bought Apple under $1, Netflix at $1.62, Amazon under $2* - this is the clearest signal yet that Phase 2 of the AI supercycle has arrived. (Split adjusted prices)

He's identified three companies set to dominate this next phase.

WHAT ACTUALLY MOVED MARKETS

The hike case is priced off a barrel that is not there anymore.

Crude ran hard into last Thursday. Hike odds went from almost nothing to a live outcome inside a week. Energy did that. Nothing else moved.

Then the strikes paused. Crude fell three sessions running and gave back most of the move.

Hike odds did not come down with it.

Overnight the strikes resumed and crude recovered part of one session. The Committee now decides against pricing built on a far more expensive barrel than the one on the screen.

The Dow bid is a memory hedge dressed as a value trade.

Four sessions. Same split. Dow up, Nasdaq down.

Large funds cannot walk away from the AI complex. The benchmarks own it.

So the exposure gets cut at the index level instead. Buy the index carrying the least memory, sell the one carrying the most, and the book looks balanced by Friday.

That produces a wide split and thin breadth underneath it. The money is leaving one supply chain. Nothing is catching it with conviction.

Structural Setup

Energy moved hike pricing this month. Nothing else did. Energy has since come well off its high. If the short end holds its hawkish level through the statement anyway, the market is pricing something it has not named.

TAPE & FLOW

Tuesday's damage was narrow. The buying was not.

Healthcare led. Staples and materials followed. Technology was the worst sector in the index. Energy was next, and crude fell all session.

The chip complex absorbed most of it. The semiconductor index dropped hard. Micron (MU), Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) and Applied Materials (AMAT) each fell high single digits.

Volatility eased anyway. The largest sector in the index took a beating. The options market got calmer.

Sector Read

Two of the three leading sectors were defensive. Call it what it is. A defensive bid in cyclical clothes. Materials is the only real cyclical in the group. It gives first if crude keeps climbing. Watch it against healthcare at the open.

POWER & POLICY

The Fed's forward guidance has gone dark, and that was a choice.

July carries no projections. That is the calendar. The rest is not.

Kevin Warsh has run this Committee since May. He refused to submit a dot in June, his first projection round as chair. It was not helpful in the conduct of policy, he told reporters.

The market now reads this Committee through everyone except the man running it.

The removal question sits underneath all of it. The Supreme Court ruled in June that the President cannot remove Governor Lisa Cook. The same ruling widened his reach over other agencies. Independence now rests on one carve-out rather than a principle.

That does not price today. It prices the next time a governor and the White House disagree in public. And it prices in term premium, never in the policy rate.

Watch Signal

Half of those who did submit in June had a hike on the board for this year. Those dots are the only forecast the Committee itself has on the table today. If the chair stays silent again at the press conference, that half becomes the market's proxy chair through September.

ONE LEVEL DEEPER

SK Hynix just posted the biggest quarter in its history.

Revenue set a company record. Operating profit set a company record. Margins were extraordinary.

The stock fell hard enough to take the index down with it. Just after midday in Seoul the exchange stopped for twenty minutes. Same as Tuesday. It had never happened on consecutive sessions before.

Both lines came in under consensus. The shortfall runs to billions of dollars in a single quarter. Most large chipmakers miss by a whisker or not at all.

The demand question is now closed. AI memory sold in record volume at record prices. The company still could not reach the number analysts had penciled in.

The Read

The risk moved. It sits in the estimate now. Every supplier in this chain carries a raised number. Korea just failed to clear the assumption those numbers were built on. Watch how Micron trades against the broader semi tape today, because it is carrying the same one.

THE CLOSE

Nobody expects a move at two o'clock. The level is not the news. The vote is.

Strip away the projections and the chair's own silence. The dissent count is the only forward guidance left today.

One dissent and the statement still speaks for the Committee.

Three and it only speaks for the chair.

That number prints at two, before he says a word.
