The Front End Relaxed. The Long End Didn't. PCE Backed the Front End.Futures are quiet. S&P contracts sit near flat, and Nasdaq futures are slightly lower. The quiet stops at the index level. October hike odds have dropped to 43% from 71% on Monday. That is a 28-point swing in two sessions, and softer-than-expected PCE now gives that move an inflationary backdrop. The long end has not joined the front end. The 10-year is at 5.232%, off Tuesday's 5.289% high. It is still about seven basis points from its 2007 peak of 5.303%. Oil is firmer. WTI is up about 1.5% near $90.74 and has recovered part of Tuesday's drop. This is also the last session of September and of Q3. Every move today gets stamped into the quarterly record. PCE rose 3.4% year over year in August, below the 3.7% expected, while core PCE rose 3.0%, below the 3.3% forecast. Market ImplicationThe market repriced October patience before it had the data to justify it. PCE now gives that move support. The softer-than-expected inflation print reduces pressure for another October hike, while the 2-year should show how firmly traders accept the new rate path.
There's a Strategy Behind the Iran War.I know because I've seen the evidence firsthand. On March 2nd — three days after the first missiles hit — I sat across from two U.S. Congressmen in back-to-back private meetings. Those meetings pointed me toward something I spent weeks verifying. The real purpose behind the strikes. The real objective. And the single company at the dead center of all of it. This isn't random. It's a calculated Two-Front Economic War. And there's one company positioned right at the heart of it. See the strategy behind the Iran war — and the company at the center of it The sooner you understand what's really happening — the better positioned you'll be before — Dylan Jovine, Founder, Behind the Markets
WHAT ACTUALLY MOVED MARKETS Two Bidders. One Contract. A Six-Point Spread Before the Open.Boeing (BA) won the Navy's F/A-XX contract, a sixth-generation fighter program worth more than $20 billion. The jet is designed to replace the F/A-18 Super Hornet fleet in the 2030s. The contest came down to Boeing and Northrop Grumman (NOC). Boeing is up more than 3% premarket. Northrop is down more than 3%. A winner-take-all defense award produces this kind of move. There is no partial credit. One company gains a program that runs into the next decade, and the other loses a growth line it had been bidding for. For Boeing, the award changes the mix. Defense work runs on long program timelines, and that makes the revenue easier to forecast than commercial deliveries. Boeing's commercial deliveries have been hard to forecast for years. The premarket move prices the win. It does not price the terms. Structural SetupContract structure decides what this award is worth. Boeing has taken large charges on fixed-price defense development programs before, with the KC-46 tanker as the clearest example. If F/A-XX development carries fixed-price risk, the contract is both a revenue line and a risk line. The disclosure to watch is how management describes program economics on the next earnings call.
The Premarket Is Sorting on Company News, Not Macro. The index futures are flat. The single names are not. Boeing is up and Northrop is down on one decision. Robinhood (HOOD) is up more than 2% after unveiling an in-app AI agent and 24-hour weekend trading for US stocks. Weekend trading is the feature that changes behavior. Retail investors currently watch Saturday and Sunday news and wait for Monday's open to act. Institutions have had derivatives and OTC markets to hedge over the weekend. Robinhood is narrowing that gap. The agent matters because of where it sits. It lives inside a brokerage account, next to the positions and next to the cash. An assistant in a chat window can suggest a trade. One inside the account is a click away from placing it. On a morning when the macro is on hold until 8:30, the tape is rewarding clear, company-specific catalysts. Sector ReadDefense traded as a zero-sum event, and the next Pentagon awards will get the same binary treatment. In brokerage, Robinhood has now set a feature benchmark. Charles Schwab (SCHW) is the peer to watch for a response. The proof will show up in Robinhood's next quarterly report, when weekend volume shows whether retail traders actually use the window.
China's Factories Returned to Expansion. The Gains Were Narrow.China's official manufacturing PMI rose to 50.1 in September from 49.8 in August. That ends a two-month contraction streak. The non-manufacturing PMI also moved up, to 50.2. The composition matters more than the headline. The improvement was concentrated in equipment and high-tech manufacturing. Broad domestic demand did not lead the recovery. That shapes what the print means for markets. A recovery built on high-tech output supports industrial metals and the Asian hardware supply chain. It does less for the consumer-facing parts of China's economy that have dragged on growth. It also matters for the trade talks. A manufacturing sector back above 50 gives Beijing a stronger hand than one still contracting. Watch SignalSeptember industrial profits are due later in October. If profits rise along with output, the recovery is reaching earnings. If output rises while profits stay weak, Chinese manufacturers are buying volume with margin, and the 50.1 reading overstates the recovery.
$7.12 Trillion Earning Almost Nothing Is a Bank Funding Story. The Wall Street Journal reported that roughly $7.12 trillion sits in consumer and business checking accounts earning little or no interest. That money is the cheapest funding a bank has. It stays put mostly because moving it takes effort. Most people do not shop for yield on their checking balance. AI agents remove that effort. An agent that watches the balance and sweeps idle cash into higher-yielding accounts turns a one-time decision into a standing instruction. The rate backdrop raises the stakes. With the 10-year above 5.2%, the gap between what checking accounts pay and what cash can earn is wide. As long as moving money takes effort, that gap is bank profit. Once moving it is automatic, the gap becomes a reason to leave. The balance-sheet term is deposit beta, meaning how much of a rate move banks must pass through to depositors to keep their funding. Automation pushes deposit beta higher without any change in Fed policy. Robinhood's agent sits inside a brokerage account, right where swept cash could land. The ReadThis will not show up in a single quarter's deposit data. It will show up first in bank commentary on funding costs when banks report in mid-October. Watch for executives describing deposit costs rising faster than rates alone would explain. That would be the first sign the sweep has started.

Economic Data: ADP employment 8:15 a.m. ET | August PCE inflation: 3.4% YoY, 3.0% core | GDP revision | Chicago PMI Fed Speakers: Governor Cook | Minneapolis Fed President Kashkari Earnings: Conagra (CAG) and Cal-Maine Foods (CALM) before the bell | Micron (MU) after the close Overnight: Nikkei +1.9% | ASX +0.9% | Stoxx 600 flat | WTI +1.4%
PCE Gives the 43% Some Cover. The market had been pricing Fed patience for two days without inflation data to back it. PCE supplied that data, and the result was softer than expected. Headline PCE rose 3.4% year over year and core PCE rose 3.0%, both below expectations. The softer print gives the front end more reason to hold the 28-point October repricing, while the long end remains seven basis points from its 2007 peak. That puts the Paramount Skydance bond sale in a tight spot. A roughly $32 billion corporate deal is expected to price today. That is a lot of duration for the market to absorb on a morning when duration is being tested. Micron reports after the close. Memory pricing is tonight's cleanest read on whether AI hardware demand is still tightening supply. The quarter closes on one number in the morning and one report at night. October opens on whatever the 2-year does in between.
3 Market Signals Most Investors Aren't WatchingThe headline is usually the last place the story shows up. By the time everyone is talking about a stock… the signals underneath it may have been changing for weeks. • Institutional money moves. • Options activity changes. • Management confidence shifts. • Fundamentals improve, or quietly begin telling a different story. That’s exactly what our analysts found in three stocks where the evidence stopped agreeing with itself. And in all three cases, the story is still developing.
