TQ Evening Briefing

Alibaba released its second Chinese AI model in a week. BlackRock is leading $12 billion in debt for Meta's Texas data centers. The Houthis declared a maritime embargo on Saudi Arabia.

The Setup

Chips Bounced on the Same News That Crashed Them Friday. That Is the Signal.

The Nasdaq gained. The S&P rose. The Dow fell slightly. Chips led the session higher after last week's brutal 9% weekly decline in the semiconductor ETF (SMH).

Alibaba (BABA) released Qwen 3.8 Max. It is a 2.4 trillion parameter model that Alibaba says ranks second only to Anthropic globally. That is the same category as Friday's Kimi K3, which crashed chips globally. The market bounced today. Same news type. Opposite reaction.

WTI spiked to $84 at the open, pulled back, and settled near $82 after Iran's foreign minister signaled mediators remained active.

TQ Trade Implication

Friday's chip selloff was three weeks of positioning exhaustion. Today confirmed that. The AI capex story held. Alphabet (GOOGL) and Tesla (TSLA) report Wednesday and set the next real test for AI monetization.

Theme One

The Bounce on Alibaba Tells You More Than the Model Itself.

Friday's chip crash happened when Moonshot AI released Kimi K3. Chips fell double digits globally. Today Alibaba launched Qwen 3.8, another Chinese model at similar scale, and the market rallied. Same category of news. Complete reversal.

Citi Research said full-stack players like Alibaba are better positioned long-term. The model ranks second globally on its own benchmarks. That is a bold claim but the market has already priced China AI competition in. When the same risk arrives a second time and the tape does not break, the de-risking is done. That matters ahead of the Fed. The market de-risked on China AI competition before Warsh has to answer for it Wednesday July 29.

Micron (MU) gained over 5%. Astera Labs (ALAB) rose over 4%. The names hit hardest last week bounced hardest today. That is mechanical relief from oversold conditions, not a new fundamental thesis.

TQ Execution Bias

The entry point was Friday. Today confirmed the bounce. Own the oversold quality chip names. The next fundamental reset is Wednesday's Alphabet capex guidance.

Theme Two

BlackRock Is Funding Meta's Data Centers With $12 Billion in Debt. The AI Build Didn't Stop.

BlackRock is leading a $12 billion debt financing package for Meta's (META) new El Paso, Texas data center complex. That is the world's largest asset manager funding the world's largest social network's AI build through the debt market.

Last week equity markets were selling AI hardware because spending looked unsustainable. Simultaneously, the debt markets are financing the same buildout at scale. Both cannot be right indefinitely. Debt flowing freely into contracted AI infrastructure is the more reliable signal of long-term conviction than a week of equity de-grossing. US companies have already issued $344 billion in equity this year, more than 2022 through 2025 combined. Meta shifting from equity to debt is what happens next when the equity issuance well runs deep.

Meta is not retreating from AI. It is restructuring how it funds the buildout. Equity buybacks support the stock. Debt finances the infrastructure. That is efficient capital structure, not panic.

TQ Execution Bias

Physical AI infrastructure with contracted tenants and investment-grade debt behind it is the safest layer of the AI capex story. Own data center REITs and power plays with long-term agreements. The equity volatility is not touching the debt story.

Theme Three

The Houthis Declared a Maritime Embargo on Saudi Arabia. The Oil Crisis Has a New Front.

The Houthis announced a maritime embargo against Saudi Arabia, threatening to expand the energy disruption into the Red Sea via the Bab el-Mandeb Strait. WTI hit $84 at the open before pulling back. Gas prices crossed $4 a gallon nationally for the first time in weeks.

The US Strategic Petroleum Reserve sits at its lowest level since 1983. Every time a new oil front opens, the cushion to absorb it shrinks. The SPR has been used three times this year. There is not much left. Three supply-side inflation mechanisms arrived in five days. Iran waiver ending Thursday. Houthi maritime embargo Monday. SPR at 1983 lows sitting underneath both.

Saudi Arabia produces roughly 10% of global oil supply. A Houthi embargo may not hold but announcing it alone reprices tanker insurance, routing economics, and supply risk across the Arabian Peninsula before a single barrel moves.

TQ Edge Setup

WTI pulling back from the morning high says the market is not fully pricing the Houthi embargo as durable yet. If it holds 48 hours it reprices energy names immediately. Own integrated energy into the week.

Quick Themes
  • AMD (AMD) launched Helios, its first rack-scale AI system to directly rival Nvidia (NVDA). Microsoft (MSFT) will deploy it in Azure alongside Meta and OpenAI. Enterprise AI now has competitive pricing pressure at the hardware layer for the first time. That is structurally bearish for Nvidia margins over time.
  • AMC Entertainment (AMC) posted record quarterly revenue, up 14% year-over-year on Christopher Nolan's "The Odyssey." The film broke Imax records globally. Movie theaters are not dead. The streaming narrative had written the sector off. AMC corrected that story in one quarter.
  • Jersey Mike's filed for an IPO targeting $8 billion under the ticker SMKE. Cava went public at $2.2 billion in 2023. A sandwich chain pricing at nearly four times that is either a sign of a healthy IPO market or a sign the market will learn the same lesson it always does.
The Close

Chips bounced after last week's 9% decline.

Alibaba released another massive Chinese model and the market barely blinked. BlackRock is writing a $12 billion debt check for Meta's AI buildout. The Houthis opened a maritime embargo on Saudi Arabia. WTI held near $82.

The session confirmed last week's selloff was positioning, not a break. Wednesday answers the fundamentals question. Alphabet's capex guidance and AI revenue commentary is the number the market needs. Tesla's autonomous vehicle progress is the number analysts want. Both arrive before Thursday. The Fed is in blackout and cannot save the tape if either disappoints.
