Yields Climbed. The Nasdaq Bought Chips Anyway.Bond yields rose on Tuesday, and investors still paid up for chip stocks. The Nasdaq gained 0.8%, the S&P 500 0.4% and the Russell 2000 0.2%. The Dow slipped 0.4%, and Apple (AAPL) fell 1.9% a day after guiding its holiday-quarter margin lower on higher memory costs. Chip stocks led the gains. The Philadelphia semiconductor index rose 2.6%, winning back about three-quarters of Monday's 3.4% drop but none of Friday's 7.2% slide. AMD (AMD) rose 3.7% and Nvidia (NVDA) 2.3%. After the close, AMD reported record revenue of $13.4 billion, above the top of its guidance, and data center sales nearly doubled to $8.5 billion. Its fourth-quarter forecast of about $17 billion topped estimates, and the stock rose about 7% in thin after-hours trading. The 10-year yield rose about 6 basis points to near 4.95%, mostly before the jobs data. September job openings rose to 7.5 million from 7.2 million, beating forecasts, and yields jumped only briefly after the report. Homebuilders fell. The iShares U.S. Home Construction ETF (ITB) lost 3.6% and D.R. Horton (DHI) 5%. The VIX eased to about 20.7. Voters went to the polls with results due overnight. Polymarket's contract on Democratic control of the Senate traded near 75 cents. TQ Trade Implication Tuesday showed the rate trade and the AI trade running on separate engines. Long yields feed into mortgage rates and, through them, into builders' orders and margins, while chip stocks are trading on company results. That leaves rate-sensitive groups exposed to strong data prints even on days the Nasdaq climbs. As long as the 10-year holds near 4.95%, a chip rally gives builders no cover.
CVR Agreed to Pay 3.6 Times EBITDA for Refineries. Its Stock Fell 13%.CVR Energy (CVI) agreed to buy two Marathon Petroleum (MPC) refineries and a marketing business for about $4.2 billion. The business generated $1.158 billion of EBITDA over the 12 months to Sept. 30, which puts the price near 3.6 times trailing EBITDA. CVR closed down 13.1% while rival refiners rose. Valero (VLO) gained 1.6% and PBF Energy (PBF) 3.6%. Marathon slipped 0.7%. CVR said the trailing figure reflects "current favorable market conditions." In all of 2025 the business generated $506 million of EBITDA, which puts the price at about 8.3 times. Funding includes $2.5 billion of secured debt and $800 million from commodity trader Trafigura for convertible preferred stock at $53.37 a share. CVR closed at $48.60, about 9% below that price. CVR is also selling $750 million of stock. A unit of its controlling shareholder, Icahn Enterprises (IEP), is selling $250 million of that. A separate Icahn entity's $500 million equity pledge falls away once CVR raises that much from public stock sales. CVR reported third-quarter results the same morning, so the drop can't be pinned on any one announcement. TQ Edge Setup The 3.6 times holds only if this year's margins last. At 2025's EBITDA the same price is 8.3 times, so the deal's value rests on margins more than double last year's. The stock is trading that margin cycle and the financing, not the headline multiple. If the offering prices near Tuesday's close, public buyers will be setting a lower value on CVR than its anchor investor did.
10 Ceasefire Bets Settled "No." Oil Ended Little Changed.Polymarket has now settled 10 of its U.S.-Iran ceasefire contracts as "No," four more than by Monday night. The contracts resolve "No" if the U.S. carries out a qualifying air or missile strike on Iranian land. U.S. officials, who were not named, have described limited, defensive strikes on Qeshm Island. Central Command has not commented, and Qatar says both sides are reviewing proposals. Two older contracts, for Oct. 31 and Nov. 2, are in dispute. Late in the U.S. trading day their "Yes" shares traded near 92 and 90 cents. At those prices, traders are betting the strikes won't count against those dates, on timing or on what qualifies. Oil did not follow the contracts. Brent swung from above $107 to below $101 and was slightly lower late in the day, near $104. U.S. crude was little changed near $96.80. TQ Edge Setup The contracts and the barrel answer different questions. A contract settles on whether and when one qualifying strike happened, while crude moves on expected supply, which hinges on talks still under way. That makes the disputed contracts a bet on how the rules read, not on war. If the resolution process counts the Qeshm strikes against Nov. 2, those 90-cent contracts go to zero without saying anything new about supply.
Apollo Originated a Record. Its Buyout Strategy Lost Ground.Apollo Global Management (APO) originated a record $114 billion of assets in the third quarter. Over 12 months, origination topped $350 billion and inflows reached $270 billion. Its flagship private equity strategy posted a gross return of minus 2.6% for the quarter. Direct-origination credit returned 1.8% and hybrid value 4.7%, also gross. Adjusted earnings of $2.07 a share were down from $2.17 a year earlier. Apollo booked a $1.1 billion GAAP net loss, mainly from unrealized losses in its retirement-services business that it tied to higher interest rates. The stock fell 4.9%. TQ Execution Bias Apollo's quarter split between what it originates and what it holds. New loans feed fee and spread income over time, while assets already on the books lose value when rates rise or buyout marks slip. With rates higher, the risk for alternative managers sits in their balance sheets and private equity marks, not their lending pipelines. That favors fee-driven platforms over those carrying large rate-sensitive balance sheets.
- Oracle closed above its offer price. Oracle (ORCL) rose 5.9% in its first session after pricing $10 billion of stock at $116, closing nearly 9% above that price. A 2066 Oracle bond went the other way, falling more than a point. The company's new notes carry coupons from 7% to 8.65%.
- Binance traced its theft to a fake job interview. Binance said the $6.3 billion theft grew from a campaign that began in June. It later used a fake job interview to plant malware on an engineer's computer. The exchange says 98% of affected tokens have been replenished and about $2.85 billion frozen or intercepted. Coinbase (COIN) rose 5.5%, Strategy (MSTR) 3.7% and bitcoin about 1.4% late in the day.
- Single-stock perpetuals got a U.S. green light. CFTC Chairman Michael Selig said perpetual futures on individual stocks can trade as of Tuesday on exchanges registered with both the CFTC and the SEC. The contracts never expire. He named no venue or stock list. Coinbase's derivatives exchange and Kalshi both filed in September to list them.
1 Free Thing American Citizens Can Do to Target More Income
It's not investing in CDs, Treasurys, or even getting a second job. Wall Street insider Rob Spivey has uncovered an income engine hidden beneath Elon's empire. He calls it Elon's "Shadow Trust." It consists of a handful of little-know companies that have paid out a steady stream of income going back 20 years... They've paid out $4 billion in the past 12 months… over $100 million in the past few weeks…and the next payout hits November 4. Capital Got Pricier. Growth Still Got Paid.Long yields rose, Oracle's 2066 bond slipped while its stock rallied, and CVR closed below the price its anchor investor agreed to pay. Chips rallied anyway, and AMD rose after hours following a forecast above estimates. Election results arrive overnight. If AMD holds its after-hours gain with the 10-year near 4.95%, growth is paying its way without help from lower rates. If the gain fades, Friday's chip slide is unfinished business, and higher yields have nothing to offset them.
AI Moves Into the Biotech LabFor most of the AI boom, the money followed the hardware. Chips. Data centers. Cloud. Now the algorithms are walking into the lab. In September, a drug whose target was found by AI, and whose molecule was designed by AI, dosed its first patient in a Phase III trial. A second AI-engineered medicine is in Phase III too. We profiled the 5 companies leading the shift in a new FREE Special Report: AI Moves Into the Biotech Lab. We'll text it straight to your phone. Get the Free Report by Text → |
