TQ Evening Briefing

Amazon surged 13% on AWS growing 37%. Apple fell 8% despite its strongest June quarter ever. Tim Cook delivered his final earnings call. The week ends with a clear verdict on which AI strategy the market respects.

The Setup

The Market Picked Its AI Winners This Week.

The Scorecard Is Unambiguous.

The Nasdaq closed higher for the week, driven by Amazon (AMZN) surging and Microsoft (MSFT) carrying its Wednesday night gain. The S&P ended the month positive. Apple (AAPL) and Meta (META) dragged the opposite direction.

WTI held near $88 to close the week. Iran escalation continued but oil stopped making new highs. The bond market's 30-year yield held near multi-decade highs after Thursday's bond market revolt following the Fed hold. PCE came in at 3.7% annual and core at 3.3%, both in line, giving the Fed no new reason to panic.

TQ Trade Implication

The week sorted AI winners cleanly. Cloud monetizers won. Social media spenders lost. Hardware-constrained names lost. Own the cloud layer. The pattern repeats next quarter until proven otherwise.

PREMIER FEATURE

Apple just crossed a historic milestone — $5 trillion in market value, with shares climbing 25% this year.

New product launches. Foldable phones. Upgrade programs built for frequency.

One thing is clear: the smartphone isn't going anywhere. It's becoming more valuable.

That's exactly why Mode Mobile has investors paying attention.

Instead of competing with Apple, Mode is building on top of the smartphone ecosystem — helping users earn from the time they already spend on their phones.

And unlike most pre-IPO companies, Mode already has the traction to back it up:

  • 490M+ users
  • $115M+ lifetime revenue
  • $1B+ earned and saved by users
  • 170+ countries served
  • 60,000+ investors
  • Deloitte's #1 fastest-growing software company in North America — 32,481% growth

Pre-IPO shares are still available at $0.52 — but the price changes on August 14.

Theme One

Amazon Proved AWS Is the Infrastructure Everyone Is Paying For.

Amazon (AMZN) posted Q2 AWS revenue growing 37% year-over-year, the strongest cloud growth since 2021. The stock surged 13%. AWS is where every company building AI goes to run their models. When Microsoft, Anthropic, and OpenAI spend on infrastructure, a large part of that spend lands inside AWS. Amazon collects the bill.

The contrast with Meta (META) is exact. Meta spent $130-145B in capex this year and saw free cash flow collapse 91%. Amazon spent similarly on AWS and generated cash from it because it is a landlord collecting rent, not a developer building something that has not yet opened. Same AI boom. Completely different business model receiving it.

AWS crossing 37% growth with margins expanding means AI demand is now translating into real cloud economics. That is the number every investor in the space wanted to see.

TQ Execution Bias

AWS at 37% growth with expanding margins validates the entire cloud infrastructure thesis. Own the picks and shovels. Amazon is the shovel.

Theme Two

Apple Missed Guidance Because of AI Chips. The Company That Avoided AI Capex Got Hit By AI Demand.

Apple (AAPL) beat Q3 revenue estimates with iPhone revenue up 22%. Then it guided Q4 revenue at $111.7-113.7B, missing the $114.8B estimate. The reason: memory chip and advanced silicon supply constraints caused by AI data center demand consuming the same supply chain.

Apple spent years avoiding the AI capex arms race. It did not build data centers. It did not sign $200B GPU orders. It let Alphabet, Amazon, and Microsoft fight over Nvidia allocations. Now Apple's supply chain is constrained by the same AI buildout it opted out of. The company that played defense got caught by the offense it avoided.

Services revenue of $30.74B also missed estimates. Greater China came in below expectations. Three miss categories in a single quarter is unusual for Apple.

TQ Execution Bias

Apple's miss was guidance, not execution. iPhone demand is real. The supply constraint resolves when AI chip allocation normalizes. Watch Q4 actual versus guided carefully before writing the stock off.

15X Bigger Than SpaceX: Elon's New Launch

While the rest of the market goes crazy for "the mother of all IPOs", a new Elon Musk innovation is quietly being rolled out nationwide. It's been 27 years in the making, and it could have a radical impact on how millions of people manage their money… and even collect Social Security. Here's everything you need to know.

Theme Three

The Week's AI Earnings Scorecard Has a Pattern. It Is the Framework for the Rest of the Year.

Four Mag 7 companies reported this week. The results sorted cleanly.

Microsoft (MSFT): Azure 43% growth, Copilot 30 million paid seats, stock up roughly 15%. Amazon: AWS 37% growth, cloud margins expanding, stock up 13%.

Meta (META): revenue beat, free cash flow down 91%, operating margin collapsed from 43% to 31%, stock down 8%. Apple: record quarter, guidance miss on chip supply, stock down 8%.

The pattern is not complicated. Prove AI is generating cloud revenue: rewarded. Show AI spending is eating into margins without offsetting revenue: punished. Get caught in AI chip supply constraints without being the AI infrastructure beneficiary: punished.

TQ Edge Setup

Next quarter the same framework applies. Own cloud infrastructure monetizers heading into Q3 earnings. Reduce margin-compressing AI spenders unless they show revenue acceleration.

Quick Themes
  • The 30-year Treasury yield held near 5.24%, its highest level in decades, through the week even after PCE came in at 3.3% core. The bond market is pricing a long-term inflation premium the Fed has not acknowledged. That spread between Fed language and bond market pricing is the most important unresolved tension in markets.
  • Exxon Mobil (XOM) and Chevron (CVX) report next week. WTI held near $88 through the week. Both companies set Q3 guidance into a structurally elevated oil environment. Watch capex guidance from both as the energy side of the inflation story.
  • Bill Ackman disclosed large positions in Microsoft and Meta this week, calling both "beaten-down" relative to their fundamentals. For Microsoft, he was right within 24 hours. For Meta, the bet needs a quarter to prove out.

The Close

Amazon surged 13%. Apple fell 8%. Tim Cook signed off from his last earnings call. The week ends with a clear market verdict: cloud monetization wins, AI spending without proof of returns does not.

The pattern this week is the framework for Q3. Every hyperscaler that reports next quarter faces the same question. Is AI generating cloud revenue faster than it is consuming capital. Microsoft and Amazon just showed what yes looks like. Meta showed what no looks like. Apple showed what getting caught in the middle looks like. The market will not forget which column each name ended up in.
